The Year of RE

release

Let’s assume that you don’t know anything about what is going on at New Venture Christian Church. Maybe we haven’t done the best job communicating or someone hasn’t been paying attention. So I will start at the beginning and lay out the plans and directions of the church through some blog posts.

To begin with, NVCC entered into a transition period on January 1 of 2015. That transition is involves the lead minister of the church. During 2015 I will be releasing the lead role of the church and handing it off to Chris Garrett. This transition period will take up to twelve months, if needed.

Founding Pastor

I was the founding pastor of New Venture and have led the church over the last eleven years. During that time we have met in three temporary locations for Sunday services including Carmike Cinemas, Tomahawk Creek Middle School and currently the SDA building on Courthouse. In addition, during that time the church has purchased property on Lucks Lane, renovated a facility there for a ministry center and will build a permanent meeting place and church campus on that site in the future.

Next Level

After eleven years in the lead role I realize it is time to transition to a younger leader who will move the church forward to its next level with fresh and compelling vision and passion. Chris Garrett is just that person.
Chris grew up in Virginia Beach but has been on staff at Indian Creek Christian Church, a mega church in the Indianapolis area, for the past seven years. He comes with proven experience, solid credentials and a passion for reaching those who are far from God.

Chris and I are equally sharing the Sunday teaching responsibilities at the current time. As the year unfolds more and more of the preaching will be transferred from me, to him.

The Year of RE

So we are calling this The Year of RE. The first RE is RELEASE. I will be releasing the lead role to Chris Garrett who will be leading the charge as soon as the full transition is in place.

Looking ahead, other RE’s to come are…
• Relocating
• Restaffing
• Relaunching
• Revisioning
• Remissioning
• Recareering

NV Celebrates First Anniversary

Can you believe it? It was just a year ago that New Venture relocated and relaunched at Tomahawk Creek Middle School. What a blessing the facility has been. It is so suited for use by a church. In fact, at the dedication of the TC I was asked to have the dedication prayer. I was seated on stage next to the architect who drew the plans for the building. I leaned over and commented to him that the building was so user friendly for someone like a church to use. He responded, “We designed it that way.” The county is now designing their buildings to be rented by churches and other not for profit groups. They intentionally want them to be user friendly. TCMS is certainly that and more for New Venture.

I want to say that 2009 has been a great year of meeting at TC. We have used the building for a number of “first” for our church family including our first official “fellowship meal.” I have sprinkled this post with a few pictures from the year.

But I want to add that 2010 and beyond will be far more tremendous than we have in any way experienced to this point. The future is so wide open and full of ministry opportunity. God has raised up this church to be Christ in this community and we will experience that to ever increasing degrees as we move with anticipation into the future. I am so excited about all that the future holds.

The only disadvantage we have identified about the TCMS facility is its location. It is off the beaten path, so we are depending on everyone to continually get he word out. Talk up the church, clearly explain our location and consistently invite others to join us for our gatherings. Word of mouth is our best marketing plan.

What Did You Think About Relaunch?

pict0016I personally thought that NVCC relaunch day at Tomahawk Creek Middle School on Sunday was exhilarating and powerful. The set-up crew worked hard to turn a school building into a meeting place for the church and what a job they did.

As we moved toward our 10:00 starting time people began to stream toward the huge “Enter Here” banner. When the day was over just a few shy of 300 joined us for the day. Friends brought friends, family, neighbors and co-workers.

Other than a little trouble figuring out why our sound system was broadcasting over the school wireless network, everything came off pretty smoothly. With a few adjustments and corrections we will be ready to go again this week.pict0022

I began a four part series of messages on Confessions of a Pastor. What I addressed Sunday was “Sometimes I Doubt God.” If you’ve ever had any doubts when it comes to God I would encourage you to take a few minutes and listen to the entire message. You will hear me advocate some things about doubt that you don’t usually hear from a Pastor. Here’s a quick link to the message if interested. (Available 1/14/09)

Here is a link to the video of my confession that we showed just before the message.

If you missed the first week, how about joining us this week? If you made it last week, I hope it is your intention to return. And would you please tell others about your experience?

By the way, what did you think about the entire experience? I would love to get your two on it. Feel free to comment.

What’s Brewing?

Are you new to New Venture and would be interested in hanging out a little while and getting to know each other a little better? Would you like to know a little more about NV and where she’s headed? Are you a little curious about this church that has moved to a nearby middle school? Would you like to have a better idea as to whether or not this church is led by a bunch of religious quacks?

If so, you are invited to join me, Steve, and my wife, Sharon, on Thursdays at Café Caturra, 13830 Village Place Drive, Midlothian, VA 23114. That’s any Thursday, beginning January 15. Café Caturra is in the middle of the old Village of Midlothian. Let’s say 6:30 PM. No reservations required. The coffee is on us.

Notice I said this is for new guests and visitors to New Venture. I will even go so far as to invite those who are considering checking out NV but haven’t done so yet.

We’ll hang out, get to know each other a little more and answer questions you might have about New Venture Christian Church. Come and find out what’s brewing with New Venture.

TCMS Relaunch is Almost Here

pict00643We have known for seven months and have been planning since May to move to a new meeting place for New Venture Christian Church. The day has almost arrived, January 11, 2009.pict00613

Last Sunday’s run through at Tomahawk Creek Middle School went remarkably well. We didn’t experience any challenges that could not be addressed or solved. We still have set-up and take-down efficiencies to develop but that is normal and will come with time.

To prepare for relaunch Sunday we have…

Prayed for hours and hours
Invited hundreds and hundreds of friends, family and neighbors
Posted 21 billboards in the Richmond area
Distributed 75,000 flyers (or will have before we are finished)
Prepared a quality ministry for kids, youth and adults
And trusted that all our efforts will bring fruit to God’s glory.

When we first launched NV in October of 04 we had 320 people at our first service. Even though many of those were curiosity seekers and well-wishers, it was a big day. We are hoping, praying and working for an all time attendance record for NV. We are hoping for at least 321 to come to Relaunch this Sunday. If you are reading this and able to do so, I would like to invite you to join us at TCMS at 10, this Sunday, January 11. Or come at 9:30 and hang out for a little while.

I believe you will be glad you did.

Confessions of a Pastor

Life is not always a bowl of cherries, even for someone whose existence is devoted to ministry leadership. I face the same kind of temptations as everyone else. I deal with the same emotions that you struggle with. I have to learn how to grow through them and win over them if my spiritual journey is to experience progress.

To help us understand some of the struggles that are common to all of us I am beginning a new teaching series January 11, that I am calling “Confessions of a Pastor.” There is a lot I could confess to you, but I am going to stick to four areas of transparency.

Sometimes I doubt God.

I don’t like many Christians.

I stink at criticism.

I worry too much.

I think we have more in common than you might realize.

MOVE COMING REAL SOON!

In case you didn’t get the word, WE’RE MOVING. New Venture Christian Church is relocating and relaunching at TOMAHAWK CREEK MIDDLE SCHOOL. TCMS is spankin’ brand new and is a tremendously improved facility.

We have developed a strong church community at Carmike Cinema over the past four years but it is time for us to move to bigger and better things. The largest auditorium at the theater accommodates less than 200 people while the school auditorium seats 650+.

TCMS opened its doors for the first time just three months ago so it is clean, state of the art, well lighted, easily accessible and tremendously user friendly for our needs as a church community. The new facility will provide us with much greater time flexibility as well as event options. Plus, the custodial staff is first class.

Here are the details:

Last service at Carmike Theater—December 28, 2008, 10:00 AM

Regular service at TCMS to work out the bugs—January 4, 2009, 10:00 AM

Relaunch Sunday at TCMS—January 11, 2009, 10:00 AM

Everyone is invited to the January 4 service which will be a normal NV Sunday with full kids programming. We are not promoting the 4th as our official beginning so that we can have one Sunday to work out any kinks a new location might bring. We do not anticipate any difficulties but will use it to solve any that might decide to show up.

Please plan on joining us at TCMS. If you visited NV in the past and were turned off by the dark, sticky theater setting, change is here. If you visited in the past and just neglected to return, please consider using this opportunity to check out NV again. If you are a regular with the church, we will be looking for you with all your friends and neighbors.

Sorry, no moving sale planned.
